As town planners, we are constantly pondering the question of whether the idea of community is being lost in our fast-paced, digitally connected world. With the rapid changes in social dynamics, urbanisation, and the impact of technology, it’s natural to reflect on how the concept of community has evolved over time.
In traditional communities, people lived in close-knit neighbourhoods, knew their neighbours, and participated in local activities. There was a strong sense of interconnectedness, mutual support, and shared identity. However, in today’s modern society, we are witnessing shifts in how people interact, connect, and engage with their communities.
One of the factors that has influenced the idea of community is the rise of urbanisation. As cities have grown and become more cosmopolitan, people from diverse backgrounds and cultures come together in shared spaces. This can lead to a sense of fragmentation, as people may feel disconnected from their immediate neighbours or struggle to find a common sense of belonging.
Another factor is the increased mobility of people. With people moving more frequently for work, education, or other reasons, the sense of rootedness and long-term relationships in a community may be diminished. This can impact the formation of strong community bonds and shared experiences.

Furthermore, community engagement and participation in the planning process itself can empower residents to have a voice in shaping their communities. Engaging stakeholders in decision-making, listening to diverse perspectives, and involving the community in the planning process can build trust and a sense of ownership, leading to more vibrant and inclusive communities.
While the concept of community may be evolving in modern society, it is not necessarily being lost entirely. Communities can take different forms, and town planners have a vital role in promoting community engagement, fostering a sense of place, and celebrating local heritage. By embracing change, fostering inclusive and participatory planning processes, and creating opportunities for meaningful social interactions, we can continue to cultivate vibrant and resilient communities that thrive in today’s ever-changing world.
