Introduction to Emily Floeser

Emily Floeser is a Chartered Town Planner and Landscape Architect with a diverse background in landscape design, historic conservation, and town planning. Although originally from the United States, Emily has built the majority of her professional career in the UK and Ireland. She brings her extensive expertise to Planning House, where she contributes to shaping sustainable, functional, and visually appealing developments. Based in Newcastle, Emily takes a multi-disciplinary approach to her work, drawing on her education and professional experience to deliver thoughtful, community-focused solutions that align with the ethos of Planning House.

Emily’s career in design and planning began with a BSc in Landscape Architecture from Cornell University. During the 2008 recession, she launched her own gardening business, remaining active in the field despite challenging economic times. Her interest in heritage protection led her to pursue an MSc in Historic Conservation at Oxford Brookes University, where she developed a strong foundation in preserving historic sites while supporting community development. One of her early roles as a Conservation Consultant involved documenting preservation works on a historic castle in Ireland.

In 2014, Emily moved to Newcastle to pursue an MSc in Town Planning at Newcastle University, where she realised her passion for influencing landscape design and the regeneration and conservation of heritage assets at a larger scale. Since then, her career has focused on blending landscape architecture, heritage conservation, and town planning. Her recent decision to join Planning House is driven by her desire to further contribute to creating sustainable, vibrant communities through her combined planning and landscape expertise.

Emily’s work from 2015 to 2019 centred on landscape architecture before transitioning fully into town planning. This experience as a Landscape Architect has given Emily an in-depth understanding of the process and perspective that sub-consultants and consultants go through. It has enabled her to communicate more effectively with design teams, ensuring a smoother planning application process. Emily has worked on a range of projects, including securing planning permissions for retrofitting solar panels and air-source heat pumps, as well as managing rural residential developments that align with the ever-evolving planning regulations. Her extensive experience includes navigating the complexities of listed building consents and integrating landscape design into planning applications for both heritage and environmentally sensitive sites.

Her key strengths lie in conducting detailed site surveys, providing clear and actionable insights through comprehensive reports, and guiding planning applications to successful outcomes. Emily’s experience with masterplans and listed building consents equips her with a well-rounded skill set, allowing her to make a positive impact on the built environment.

Outside of work, Emily enjoys karate, salsa and blues dancing, and engaging in various crafts. She lives in the North East with her husband and two cats, Tondi and Etta. As part of the Planning House team, Emily looks forward to contributing to the creation of resilient and vibrant communities across the region.
